History

Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence was established in 2001 for the purpose of developing community resources to help Highline Public Schools students succeed. We believe that by helping to enrich the classroom and school experience, we can engage students to reach a higher level. The Foundation is governed by a dedicated group of volunteer Trustees and is the only 501(c)(3) organization supporting all 32 Highline Public Schools. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed more than $250,000.

About Highline Public Schools/Did you know?

• The Highline School District is one of the largest school districts in the State serving Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, and White Center.
Of the 17,600 students enrolled:
• 57% represent ethnic minorities.
• 56% receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch, which is an indication of the economic challenges faced by many families in our community.
• 12% are English Language Learners, representing over 80 countries with more than 70 languages spoken.

Meeting the Need

Foundation Board of Trustees focus efforts on four key areas:
• Academic Achievement
• Classroom Enrichment
• Scholarships
• The Arts

Priorities

Led by a leadership gift from our Board of Trustees, the Foundation has a goal of raising $200,000 in 2006. Our priorities are:

Books that Reflect our World

Reading is the foundation skill for student achievement. There are not enough high quality books available for students to read. We aim to change that! Our goal is to raise $20,000 to purchase multicultural books. Having books that reflect the diversity of our community is crucial for student success. Books will support language arts instruction for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade

Building A Path for Career Success

Our goal is to reduce financial obstacles that prevent many deserving students from fulfilling their potential. The more successful students are, the more likely they will contribute to our community. We aim to raise $100,000 for university, community college, and technical school scholarships.

Inspiring Innovative Teaching

The difference between a satisfactory and a great learning experience is tough to measure, but we know that providing a little extra can help create the extraordinary. Once a year, Highline teachers have a chance to fund innovative learning experiences for their students through our Excel Grant program. Our goal is to distribute at least $30,000 of $50 to $1,000 grants. The Foundation also plans to adopt all Highline elementary school classrooms with a one-time grant of $100 per classroom for a total of $35,000. All middle and high school classrooms have already been adopted.

The Arts -- Not Required, but Essential!

The Foundation plans to support the Highline music program by refurbishing and purchasing band instruments. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help elementary, middle, and high school students. We also support Highline Public School’s Summer Arts Academy, a two-week program in July for students entering 3rd through 8th grade. Classes offered include visual, music, and performing arts. We aim to raise $5,000 to provide scholarships for Highline community youth to participate in Summer Arts Academy.

Working Together – How you can Help

Gifts to the Foundation come in many forms – individual, business, corporate match, service group, foundation, United Way pledge, in-kind, volunteer time, and more. We have even received gifts in honor of a wedding! Donations can be restricted for a specific purpose or school or may be unrestricted for the greatest need. Every contribution to Highline Schools Foundation makes a positive difference in our Highline community.
